Teams
and Rosters
-
When will teams be selected for the spring season?
All instructional teams (BlastBall!®,
Tee Ball and Coach-Pitch) must wait until the
registration deadline passes so we can determine the number of teams
that will be fielded. At that point, coaches can be finalized and
then teams selected. We try to complete the process before April 1
for all instructional teams, but that is not always possible.
Anne Arundel County
Youth Baseball and Softball teams must wait until the
registration deadline passes so we can determine the number of teams, if
any, that will be fielded. Due to lack of player participation
last year, some age brackets did not form teams. If this happens
again, you will be informed as soon as possible and your registration
fee will be refunded. For all county teams that have enough player
participation, we will try to complete the process before the second
week of March, but that is not always possible.
-
How are the teams selected?
JPYO distributes instructional league players as evenly as possible, by
not only age, but also by skill level. JPYO also tries to put
buddies on the same team. You may request one buddy to be on your
child's team. We will make all attempts to fill as many buddy
requests as possible. To make a buddy request, please include the
request in the medical information area on the registration form.
-
Can I find out what other players are on my child's team?
Yes, when the teams are made, each Team Manager will have a complete
roster list with phone numbers and e-mail addresses to distribute to his
own team.
-
My child can hit a pitched ball, can he/she play in a more advanced
division?
Batting tees are a tool for helping teach hitting mechanics and
concentration. They are used by players at all levels, including
most professionals. Please do not view it as a stigma if your
child is asked to use a hitting tee during games or practice.
Coaches are encouraged to use the pitching machine and/or coach-pitch to
players they feel are ready.
-
What kind of equipment should my child have?
No additional equipment is needed for BlastBall!®.
JPYO will furnish all the equipment. For all other divisions,
Tee Ball and higher, your child must have a baseball glove (preferably
leather). Players may also bring a pair of baseball cleats (no
metal cleats), batting glove(s), batting helmet and a bat. An
athletic cup for boys in the Machine-Pitch division and higher is
recommended and required for any boy that plays catcher. JPYO will
provide all other equipment, including bats, batting helmet, catcher's
gear, uniform jerseys and caps. Baseball pants are optional for
the instructional division.
-
Can girls play baseball?
Yes, our instructional baseball teams are for both boys and girls.
Anne Arundel County Youth Baseball is coed as well; however, most girls,
when they get older, usually switch to Anne Arundel County Girls' Youth
Softball.
-
What is
BlastBall!®?
BlastBall!®
is meant to put FUN back into the game of baseball. It is designed
to generate fast-paced action, provide recreation and exercise, create
enthusiasm and through simplicity, allow retention of youth participants
in the game. The game is played with a foam bat and foam ball hit
from a tee. Players run to a base that HONKS! The emphasis
is on team play and fun. BlastBall!®
teaches all five basic fundamentals of baseball and softball... hitting,
throwing, catching, running and fielding. It is also just a ton of
fun with fast and continuous action and simple rules.
-
Why use a
pitching machine?
By controlling the pitches with a pitching machine, there is more action
at the plate and in the field. Fear of being hit by a pitched ball
is diminished. It makes the game safer and improves the playing
confidence and ability of all participants. It removes boredom -
which is often the result of either overpowering or inadequate pitching
- by throwing only strikes. Fewer errors and greater throwing
accuracy are the result of increase in activity.
Schedules
-
When do the games begin?
Opening Day Games and Activities for
Instructional teams will be on Saturday,
April 19, 2008.
For most Anne Arundel County Baseball
and Softball leagues, the first games
will take place during the first week
after returning from April school
vacation. Ultimately, Anne Arundel
County sets up the game schedule.
-
Where will the games be played?
All instructional teams' games and
practices are held at
Provinces Park
on Disney Road, in Severn, MD.
JPYO County teams' home games are also
at Provinces Park. The softball
field is in the front of the park, while
the baseball field is at the very back
of the park.
From Annapolis: Take I-97 North to
MD-100 West, exit Arundel Mills Blvd.,
make a left back under Md-100 and make a
left at the second light, onto Ridge
Road (MD-713) toward Fort George G.
Meade. Go approximately 2 miles
and turn left at MD-175. The next
stoplight is Disney Road, turn left.
Provinces Park is located 1/4 mile on
the left. Field #1 (softball
field) is in the front of the park and
Field #2 (baseball is in the back).
-
When and where will the
schedules be available?
Schedules for instructional teams (BlastBall!®,
Tee Ball and Coach-Pitch), will be
published exclusively on this website.
They will be posted as soon as they are
available, for most leagues that will be
in early April, at least a couple of
weeks prior to the season.
Generally, Anne Arundel County Baseball
and Softball leagues' schedules are
published on the Anne Arundel County
website, usually in early April as well.
-
How
many games a
week will my child play?
Scheduling is always dependent upon the
number of teams in the league and field
availability. Generally,
instructional teams (BlastBall!®,
Tee Ball and Coach-Pitch) will play once
or twice a week, usually once during the
work week. Keep in mind that
make-up games for rainouts may result in
a child playing more than twice a week.
Anne Arundel County sets up the game
scheduling for all County Baseball and
Softball teams. County teams
usually play between one to three times
a week.
-
When should players
arrive for their games?
That is up to the individual coaches.
Some may provide you a general rule for
the entire season, but this may vary.
For initial planning purposes, figure 30
minutes before game time, but again,
check with your coach to be sure.
-
What if the
weather is bad?
Inclement weather is a fact of life.
When it happens, we try to announce
postponements as early as possible.
In iffy situations, which seem to be
occurring on most showery days, we will
announce postponements by 90 minutes
before game time on this website.
After the 90 minute cutoff, the decision
will be made at the field on a
game-by-game basis. Note also,
that a postponement on one field or by
one league does not mean that the same
will be true of others. Fields
puddle and drain at different rates and
one cannot be judged from another.
Practices
-
Will there be
practices?
Teams in most leagues will practice
before the season and, fields
permitting, on occasion during the
season as well.
-
Are practices
mandatory?
Practices are very much part of the
youth baseball/softball experience.
We try to teach mechanical and game
skills to our players. Practices
are necessary for them to learn and for
the learning to become instilled.
Practices are actually more important
than the actual games. Practices
are where you learn the skills and games
are where you try them out. Most
young players actually like the
practices better than the games.
We ask all players to try to participate
fully in all their games and practices.
-
How will I find out about
practice times?
Ultimately you will find out about
practice times from the Team Manager.
Team Managers decide their team's
practice dates, times and field
locations for you. JPYO will try
to post them on our website by league
and team when Team Managers make them
available. However, unlike games,
practices are subject to change on short
notice, so it is best to rely on what
your coach tells you.
Registration
-
How do we register?
There are several ways to register.
Upwards of 80% of our registrations are
now done online because it is so quick
and easy. You can also print out
the registration form and mail it in
along with your registration fee.
JPYO will also have several dates and
times for walk-up registration at
Provinces Park and/or a local school.
PLEASE NOTE - your child will not be
officially registered until the
registration fee has been paid.
Register
Online NOW.
-
Is there a
deadline?
Yes, the deadline to register is
March 21, 2008
to be assured a roster spot on an
instructional team (BlastBall!®,
Tee Ball and Coach-Pitch) for this
season. We must receive the
registration form and your registration
fee by March 21.
Anne Arundel County Baseball and
Softball team registration deadline is
February 23,
2008. We must
receive the registration form and your
registration fee by February 23.
-
What if we
miss the deadline?
You may still register for instructional
teams (BlastBall!®,
Tee Ball and Coach-Pitch) and be
eligible to fill a roster spot if space
is available. Unlike those who
submit timely registrations, you will
not be guaranteed a spot, but if one is
available, it will be awarded on a
first-come-first-served basis. So,
it is still advisable to register as
early as possible, even if the deadline
has passed. Those who do not get rostered will be eligible for full
refunds.
You may still also register for Anne
Arundel County Baseball and Softball
Teams, and may be eligible to fill a
roster spot if a space is available.
However, due to lack of participation in
the past, JPYO has not been able to form
County teams for all age brackets.
If JPYO does not have the minimum
players allowed for an age bracket by
February 23, 2008 those team will not be
formed. The decision to form
County teams or not will occur no later
than February 27, 2008. Again, it
is advisable to register before the
deadline. If the deadline has
passed, please e-mail JPYO before going
through the registration process to see
if there is a County team available in
your player's age bracket. Those
who do not get rostered will be eligible
for full refunds.
-
My
son/daughter is an excellent athlete, can he/she be put with older
players?
JPYO will allow players to play up or
down one age group, based on the skill
level of the player for the
instructional teams (BlastBall!®,
Tee Ball and Coach-Pitch).
Anne Arundel County Youth Baseball teams
will usually allow players to play up
one age group, based on their skill
level. Anne Arundel County Girls'
Softball will not allow players to play
out of their age group.
